Today, we have another guest post from one of our favorite geeks, CarsonGoose, who helped us figure out how to use our ipad to help us knit…with luv PurlaGoose

CarsonPortraitHi ho!  CarsonGoose here to share with you a few thoughts about using a ipad with knitting.   We guy geese wanted ipads and the only way to get one?  We had to convince the girl geese that they needed one too!  Smile   So, it was my job to figure out how to make the ipad useful for knitting and other crafts.

Traditionally, the girls used a printed piece of paper with a magnetic “marker” to remind them which line they were knitting.  I was sure that the ipad would help make the paper obsolete.   We had already worked on our scanning project documented here: http://www.knitalongcafe.com/MachineKnitting/tabid/230/entryid/289/F.aspx    So we had PDFs of our patterns.   I then heard that GoodReader – $5 ipad app was FABULOUS for knitters so we tried it out and we like it!   Maybe we don’t know how to use it fabulously, but it works and works quite well for charts.   We use annotation lines as “markers” and row highlighter.   It was enough to convince the girls to WANT an ipad and allow the guys to get one too.  Smile

Here’s what I showed to the girls to convince them that ipad-ing is GREAT!

DSCN4439<---the blue lines are the “markers” and we just move the line up as we need

DSCN4440<---we can add notes to our chart.  Since we aren’t as fluent in German as we’d like to be, we have to take notes to avoid having to spend lots of time reading and rereading

I wanted to get the girls the latest knitter app, but unfortunately, WilburGoose wouldn’t approve the budget for that.  Luckily, our buddy Fleegle wrote this article showing exactly how she uses iAnnotate.  Looks even BETTER than GoodReader and with Fleegle’s detailed explanation, Wilbur agreed to approve the budget.   http://fleeglesblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/knitting-with-ipad.html

This was one of my more fun assignments and you know…my tummy is always happier when there are happy girl geese around!   They were nice and made enchiladas for me for completing this job.  YUM!
